This remake of Ultima 4 traces its origins back to July 2003, which is when the Ultima IV Reborn mod was released for Neverwinter Nights. Years later — in 2010, to be more precise — Ultima IV Reborn saw a number of bug fixes and updates made to it courtesy of Glanestel Dragon, mostly based on feedback from people who had played the mod. An Italian translation was released soon thereafter, and was later converted to a dual-language (English and Italian) version, keeping all of the updates and enhancements that had been introduced in the Italian version, but adding in the faux Middle English text and dialogue again.

Additional revisions to Reborn adjusted the appearance of many of the monsters (to bring them more in line with Ultima lore), custom portraits , custom item icons, and Ultima-themed loading screens were also included. Several optional bits of content — an Ultima-themed GUI, an Ultima music pack, and still yet more Ultima-inspired character portraits — were also made available.

This reworked version of Reborn — renamed to Rebirth — has given the mod a significant overhaul, enough that it should be treated as a separate project. It features a new introductory sequence, a new endgame sequence, and new loading screens. Towns have been integrated into the landscape of Britannia, karma point accrual and loss has been tweaked (making it possible, or at least much easier, to advance in Honesty, Compassion, Justice, and Sacrifice). New items have been added (including swamp boots!), some item behaviours have been adjusted, and many bugs have been squashed.

Importantly, the Rebirth version of the module only works with Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, the updated and improved version of Neverwinter Nights released by Beamdog.

How many of these files are required to get the module to work? Just the first one?

    • WtF Dragon says:

Not sure. I’m usually the sort to install all the needed files for an NWN mod.

    • Melavir Sauin Dragon says:

Installation instructions are included in the zip file: Ultima IV Rebirth (Game Files), which also includes the most up-to-date module.

The only zip files listed above that could be considered completely optional are: the GUI files and the Guide. The GUI simply enchances the main menu and the in-game windows, so that everything looks a lot better. The Guide is a compilation of all of the documentation I used to keep track of what I did in the mod, and it includes a VERY BASIC walkthrough of the module’s main quests.

    Hi,

Bought NWN: EE on Steam but I cannot find the (user)/Documents/Neverwinter Nights folder. Please advise where I can place the files for this module.

    • WtF Dragon says:

Do you use OneDrive as your default Documents storage? If so, look in {user}\OneDrive\Documents, and see if the NWN folder is there.

    • Melavir Sauin Dragon says:

The only game I installed from Steam is Skyrim. As an example, this is the path I have for this game on my PC: C:\Users\Melavir Sauin\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition

Assuming you got your game for the PC, replace “Melavir Sauin” with your user name and Neverwinter Nights should be in the “My Games” folder. Does this help? The path I have in the original installation directions was for my purchase from GoG… I’m sorry for any confusion I have caused.

    • Bliznik says:

Hi CoRP, were you able to find the directory? If not, which operating system are you using? The directories change a bit when you switch between iOS, Linux, and Windows. I believe /Documents/Neverwinter Nights is the default directory used for Windows operating systems.

  3. Dead Tom Dragon says:

Hey, so, I went and downloaded the latest version, which is 2.3.0 something, from the neverwinter vault, followed the directions, installed everything and… it starts me in Buccaneer’s Den, for some reason. Anybody know anything about it?

  4. John says:

How faithful is this to the original game plot? Does it include the whole Quest of the Avatar and all of its components, or is it more of an “inspired by” world?

    • WtF Dragon says:

It’s got as close to everything in U4 as the developers were able to implement in NWN. Probably not an exact re-creation, but close.

    • Bliznik says:

It includes the entire Quest of the Avatar, all of its components, and adds a whole mess of sidequests.

The major places where it diverges are (1) how you level up and gain skills. It’s a NWN engine, so your character skills and level ups and powers are independent of the initial gypsy questions. (2) Traveling by sea. Instead of manually sailing a ship around, you need to find ship captains that will sail you to specific locations. Some can be quite expensive, so revisiting an area can bankrupt you if you’re not careful.

God bless you for preserving this great piece of mod, sir. This is certified one of the greatest history of modding. Have a great day, week, year and life. Bless you eternally.
